`We recall that…

`We recall that science and philosophy were pursued in schools of societies where there was close collaboration between teachers and students. The important truth which seems to have been understood, implicitly at least, from the very beginning is that learning is not a process of dishing out information. Some of this, of course, there must be. But it is neither the sole function of the teacher nor yet the most important one. This is indeed more evident today than it was at that time, for written records were rarer and harder to find than they are now. With us, it stands to reason that anyone who can read can collect information from a library. Less than ever before should a teacher need to pass on mere information. All the more is it to the credit of the philosophers of Greece that they should have grasped how genuine education must be pursued. The role of the teacher is one of guidance, of bringing the pupil to see for himself.

But learning to think independently is not an ability that comes all of a piece. It must be acquired by dint of personal effort and with the help of a mentor who can direct these efforts. This is the method of research under supervision as we know it today in our universities. …

Education, then, is learning to think for oneself under the guidance of a teacher…”

Education is not just collecting information rather thinking along with will enhance what we have gathered and in this regard creativity is part and parcel of a good education.then the  role of the teachers are that they would induce the students staying near and inculcate the habit of thinking and so forth innovation

THIS IS AN ARTICLE ON EXAM PREPARATION

How well Could You Prepare for Your Exams

Learn, good soul,
To think our former state a happy dream;
From which awak’d, the truth of what we are
Shows us but this: I am sworn brother, sweet,
To grim Necessity; and he and
Will keep a league till death.
(William Shakespeare“”)

R BALAKRISHNAN

YES, LEARNING WILL LAST LONG..WIL GIVE AWARENESS.. A COMPANION UNTIL DEATH

Exam preparation requires not just a cautious approach rather a conscious work out. The greatest Russian leader Vladimir Lenin has asked all his comrades to study , study and study that more study can refine the ideas of his followers and hence can empower their minds with clarity and versatility. As resourcefulness is the mother of any innovation what your reading can give you is the godsend that can enrich any life. Studies can be carried on three levels as regular preparation and drills or practices, extra regular practices and therapeutic practices  to hone ahead your skills.

Regular measures

What you study you yield. Your mind is a rational entity that it will always linger on constantly what you come across. Whatever the mind comes across it will create a visual for itself and will keep a record of it…consciously or unconsciously.. For that matter we cannot behave like the three monkeys an d cannot close our sensory organs. When this kind of trait is meant for the mind it is safe that we concentrate on something and make our mind bend towards hat we intend to dictate it will abide by. Hence, be attentive in class and keep a sharp eye and ear for listening.

Listen the key points…listen the beginning and end of the lecture

Watch the body language of the orator..Learn about the weightage he offers on the key points. Keep a bunch of papers in your hand sand scribble al notes of hints, key words and the key expressions. Go back home recall what he lectured through rewarding and recalling. Try draw a mind map technique so that the visuals of the central idea and the peripheral factors to envisage in front of your eyes clearly.

Maintain a daily and weekly schedule of study. Spend more time in library so that you can get an access towards all reference materials. Do the drills given by your teacher without any face shrivel. Negotiate wherever with the staff for more rewards..

Technical measures or extra regular practices.

Have advanced reading of whichever stuff is delivered to you. Advanced reading will give you a depth in your reading and motivate your teacher too. It will enhance your confidence. Keep reading faster. Fast reading will give you the gist of all the reading..in fast reading you will be unconsciously going through the paragraphs and your subconscious will linger on certain factors. A reading situation must be quite and serene, if you do not get one go in search of it. Read first any paragraph and comprehend. Global comprehension will give you getting the general ideas and the second level comprehension you will be summing up more points. First give a reading and then comprehend.. then give  a second reading .leave alone the unimportant points while reading. Make a note of important points on the side of the bookmark the specific points.. Or underline..

Good reading timings

5 m to 7 am..Early morning reading..9 am to 12 pm late morning reading..7.30 pm to 12 pm for late evening reading; introverts can prepare the early mornings but extroverts can prefer the evening reading. Keep memory sheets in hand.

During exams prepare the last exam firs t and when you arrive the last subject in preparation the first exam will be closer. Sleep well during exams ..may be you may end up reading till 12 and can close down yet wake up early ..Then prepare. On the day of the examination you need to sleep until 5.00 am.

Food

Food can be taken at relevant timings say you have a plan of regular food and you don’t need to change that. Avoiding the breakfast will weaken your heart and don’t do that. Consume a lot of raw vegetables. Eat more fruits. Going to parties’ films on exams will demotivate you and don’t do that. Consume water nd tea whenever you need as they would keep you fresh and may not giv e you digestive troubles.

Therapeutic measures.

These are all simple meditation techniques’ few schools are offering pramnayama and yoga practices that can be learnt and practiced by you.

Isha yoga centre gives you a seven day programme.

Valum kalai gives you a week assignment and as well as Ravishankar’s classes offer you enough practice in pranayama and yoga. They are good because they will create

A vacuum in our mind….improvise creative intelligence.. And give solace from our worries.

Count 100 to 0 through a descending order closing your eyes. This will help you relax before doing anything. Early morning is the good time for meditation. Keep your stomach empty. That is needed for your physical stimulus to settle down. Keep yourself easy in a chair, observe silence and ask you family member s to cooperate with you. Keep both of your hands on your lap and sit in leg folded position which is padmasana.. keep you back erect and practice meditation. However Rajneesh has a different method you can sit in an easy chair and close eyes to meditate.

ROAR

Read the text in a linear fashion to have the knowledge about how the text unfolds in front of you and how the factors shown in the text are linearly proven. All sentences have link in between them and hence while reading read the first sentence then read the second one and go back to the first one.

Organize your reading by giving a phase of all what you have read , probably after reading the whole paragraph you can give a phase and recollect and think about the factors found in the text in a pro- con pattern.

Analyze the factors given in the text with those relevant readings you have given earlier..Compare..Contrast..

Get more details about the text and maters dealt with the text and that is where you will do some rereading on it.

A TRIBUTE TO PROFESSOR NAMBISAN,HORTICULTURALIST AND INNOVATOR/ R BALAKRISHNAN

BONSAI : SMALL BUT BEAUTIFUL

Small but beautiful may not be the right syntax to describe professor Nambisan’s feat; but his miniature wilderness of various plants can rightly be identified as short but long lasting.

Born in early thirties, qualified in horticultural doctorate, he served in Coimbatore, Madurai and Kodaikkanal agricultural centers. He had at least 150 published research papers and one book, ‘’Design elements of landscape Gardening’’ (IBH) and guided 20 PG and PhDs.

‘’A Bonsai is a dwarfed, Miniature tree raised in appropriately sized pots with an artistic base’’ says the eminent professor.  The art evolved from china, Korea and Japan.  Being a floriculturist himself he got inspired to cultivate Bonsai trees to be easily mobilized.  He is also a good painter, which may be another source for getting inspired to develop plant sculptures.  His was only a self-taught art.  But there is always the difference of his cultivation of Bonsais from any house wives:  he specializes cultivating the ficus or popularly known ‘figs’.  He therefore cultivated the Nature and indigenous species and temperate species like pine, cypresses and cotoneaster which are found in hills.  Abalea is an another fine variety from the hills.  The advantage of Coimbatore is that its closeness with Ooty, where a plant lover can collect any type of species like tropical, Sub-tropical and temperate.

His unique Collections included different types of trained ficus.  Banyan, Chinese Banyan, weeping fig, Krishna’s butter cup, long island figs are the few of them.  You have the marvel of visioning the pygmy, 30 year old tamarind tree, and five different species of bamboo.  When you are standing in the midst of his dwarfed garden below your hip.  They are 300-400 in number.  Malfighia,  Serassa, Carmona, advenium are the other few.  He also cultivates rockdesigned Bonsais.  Sometimes there are rocks plus species combinations: lime rock, lactrate, feldspear of granites etal…

The methods of cultivation are various like upright, informal upright, slanting, semicascave and cascave. The trunks are serialized as 2,3,5,7 and 9.  They are wired and correctly pruned.  There is also a pro-plant combination: plant-bride & pot the mate.  There are sizes from thumb levels to 2.5 feet.  There are also colours like naval blue, sky and plants are kept in deep pots.  The plants should be regularly manured, watered and exposed to sunlight.  Repotting is an important procedure that the pots should be changed after a considerable duration.  The maximum age for his garden plants are 90 years.  He had also personally groomed his pony tailed hair for twenty years…long lasting…!but the professor is no more now his works are a marvel and a pioneer in one for the bonsai plant lovers in Coimbatore .growing bonsai cannot just beautify your hose sometimes will help enhance environment..

However this type of pruning the natural plant is an item of cruelty says an environmental activist.so discuss…

THIS IS MY NEW FICTION-PLEASE READ

SHADOWS UNDER TREE

There was shadow in bureau drawers and closets and suitcases, and shadow under houses and trees and stones, and shadow at the back of people’s eyes and smiles, and shadow, miles and miles and miles of it, on the night side of the earth.”
Sylvia Plath, The Bell Jar

I realized that my mobile is not switched off rather it was running out of power .I asked my fellow librarian to take care of the library so that I can go to my house  and take lunch too and back in an hour. My sister in my home then – she posed a glimpse as if she was expecting me for long, ‘, kanagaraj was calling you, your phone was switched off … we tried many times’

Why… is there any problem in the case? Kanagaraj is my counsel that I have made a complaint in the Coimbatore court on my mother in law and wife as she has gone for home for about six months and not returning… In fact I am not asking for a divorce yet asking the family court to give my wife counseling and set right things… the first hearing was about to come but the date was not well known as my counsel was out of station. I took a feeble food and called on my lawyer and got the reply that the first hearing is today..11.30 am.

‘ Kanagaraj it is now 1.00 pm’

‘Yes I have asked a reschedule with the magistrate in the noon at 2.15 pm  …Come soon’

Yes. I ll be there .. any one finding me running towards the wide threshold of the court would be thinking that I am acting in the final scenes of a Tamil film;; the threshold at the east was likely greeting me, swallowing me -there are around three main gates, in fact four – one closed forever and there is an another one, a wicket gate found in the west which was provided when the new building was erected. Previously there was only a compound running around the environs that the students from the government college would jump over and loom the flipside road.

The city’s court is a colossal building if uncared for would be just a headstone. It had rained heavily and the edifice was found like weeping… for whom? I was thumping over the wooden staircase of the ground floor.. ‘Please, where is the court number 6? I quipped.’

‘The family court…you are asking for the family court or no 6’… ‘Family court’ then it is 9. Go to the new building ‘replied the advocate. The lawyers in their dark aprons are moving off their rockers like angels decorated in murk… a few have their aprons folded and kept in the forearm and are seemingly lifting their moral credence and others have put them just as a hanging material. I have found two advocates entering their vicinity through their bikes as flying like supermen as the apron was on. The court is structured among all government edifices built during the British period and this area is cocktail of old and modern structures which have, sometimes a sense of Christianity and British authority. The court building is a curved Gothic beauty and nearby found is a modern theatre and a corporate hospital. I was running towards the court 9 cutting across a bridge connecting the old and new buildings.

Kanagaraj made a wry smile from his bench and unfolded his hands expressing you are late, I shrugged. The judge was about to come and a few bystanders – youngsters and some old ones even were all mumbling to each other.

‘My wife, I took a bit of beer, she is asking for divorce  … I am a drunkard’ someone yelled

I beat her once, you see if you beat your wife the law comes in between. When she beats me where can we go?

She bites my… One showed his hands.  I can’t bear that continuously

The women found on the other side of the court sustained a kind of talk… Might be they will be complaining about their lackluster or imbecile husbands. I found a face in among the women’s crowd that stuck my senses hard… Suddenly. It is the daughter of the principal under whom I served in a previous institution. The assistant called my name…the counsel has asked me to stand near him when I tried to board on the accused’s rostrum. He briefed…

Ramakrishnan versus with Srividhya the magistrate was reading the case study and asked, are you asking for divorce?

‘No, the woman should come back home, loyal to family, taking responsibility, my lawyer added’.

   Did you serve notice?

Yes, 20 days ago and not responded,

Send a court notice and if it is not working, we will find further proceedings…The magistrate gave us the next hearing after 15 days. I met Deepa, the principal’s daughter on the way to the registrar’s office and asked about her presence; ‘meet your principal sir; she pointed the Portia tree where a small car was parked. Parvathy Nair, my erstwhile principal got out of the vehicle on seeing me and went a few steps in the rear and stood under the tree gripping it.

,’ Ramakrishna… you are here for a divorce, ‘not exactly… I am trying some legal counseling…

See we are asking for a divorce she replied

… But why…

My son in law being a physio has been addicted to alcoholism due to work tension… at one stage counseling could not help him. His in laws may cheat him if he continues in this form. He will be with us though, for the future of his son we intend to ask for the divorce. He has been hospitalized for many times and the liver is very weak’.

She was my principal when I was serving in a nursing college-, an able lady -, was in Gulf after her MSC in nursing… has become very old now.

’ I can’t stand like this for long as I have got a pace maker fixed’. She pleaded me for rest.

They departed. I could find the long, dangling hair of Deepa seemingly licking her butt was cut then in half size. I had a call from kanagaraj and met him in his chamber. The chamber is full of lawyer’s offices and his room was shared by five more of his friends. A man came and asked him, ‘notary sign sir… for what’? He asked ‘

For my son’s scholarship sir’. Kanagaraj being a notary gave him the signature, the man shoved off Rs 100 to him and proffered. He denied waving his hand; from a nearby room a continuous sound of typewriter was drumming my ears while  I was peeing through the window – found the Portia tree under which a Vinayaga idol was kept radiating in hot sun. Shadows were dancing under the tree that gave the idol which was seemingly in a contemplating disposition a very inexplicable look.

The next hearing was on time and I was punctual. We took a cup of coffee before the proceedings. The judge asked me; sure you don’t want a divorce? No sir… means? I don’t want a divorce… he asked kanagraj what was the response for the notice. It was not collected it was returned was the reply.

Then you send a court notice… it would be delivered in person.  ‘Ok sir’… if it was not responded we will go for a public advertisement…

Fine sir…the judge vacated us.

We went down and found madam Parvathy as usual found in the car. Kanagaraj departed me…

I asked ‘had hearing today too madam?

Yes. But we are winding up the case.

Why..?

My son in law passed away by last week …it is hepatitis that challenged him… she was not completely poignant -it was looking like she was revealing a medical report while she uttered that. A small silence swallowed up all of us and I said ‘I will drop in to your house madam one day  … she nodded her head.

***************************************************

I returned home with a heavy heart and while entering the front ,on the sofa a strange woman was found… she got up when I saw her…  my senses then told me her face was more familiar for me… oh… it is .. Srividhya…  I hailed her unconsciously… we could find, in a moment the space between us is getting shorter…more and more. But how…
